She didn’t know why she was nervous. It wasn’t like she hadn’t hung out with Ned before. It had just been a long time since she had seen him. She still remembered the first time she came into contact with him. She felt as though she was stumbling all over herself when she tried to speak. She loved his videos though. She had watched them faithfully every week since the day that she had discovered them which may have only been like three months after he started making them. She had gone through half the stuff in her closet before she decided on an appropriate outfit. She cursed herself for even going through the effort. In the back of her mind though she wanted to try and look her best.

After deciding on an outfit, she shot him a text. ‘Hey, hope you’re ready to lose. I’m on my way now so I’ll see you soon (;’ She smiled and sent the text and slipped her phone into her bag. She left out of her apartment and locked the door before heading down to her car. She synced her phone to it and started playing her music as she drove to the track. Once there she contemplated whether to sit in the car and wait it out or go inside and wait for him. Ultimately she decided on the latter.

N
ed was surprisingly nervous which was out of character for him because he was usually so confident. It had been a while since he’d been on a date, due to being always being busy doing videos or volunteering, which is why he assumed he felt nervous. Not that Ed assumed it was a date or anything. He was just happy to have been asked to hang out. His friends were either too busy to hang out or had drifted since he became an internet ‘star’ so it had been a while since Ned had done something fun without it being related to YouTube or the youth centre. Not that the male didn’t enjoy either of those two thing but it was just nice doing something that wasn’t ‘work’ related.

Eddard was already inside when he saw Chess enter. He had only just arrived five minutes earlier himself so he hadn’t been waiting long. ‘See you soon, loser ;P’ Ned text back to her, knowing that she was probably driving so wouldn’t reply straight away. He decided to sit down on some couch near the reception desk as he waited, playing Candy Crush on his phone to calm the slight nerves that he felt.

Francesca got the alert on her car screen that she had a text message. While stopped at a red light, she read it and shook her head. “Send message to Ned”, she commanded and waited for the screen to come up. “In your dreams Ned.” “Send message” She heard honking behind her and looked up noticing that the light was green and put her foot to the gas pedal and was off once again. A few moments later she pulled into a spot in the parking lot. It had been so long since she had been here. She was more nervous though because of who she was meeting more so than what they were doing.

Chessie opened the door and entered, holding the door for a woman and her kids who were coming in behind her. The woman thanked her and she replied with a ‘you’re welcome’ before she let the door go and went to look for Ned. It didn’t take long at all for her to spot him. “Ned. Hey! Long time no actual see. Wow, you look different. It’s a good different, but different. Did you get taller? As if you didn’t already make me feel like a shrimp”, she said teasingly. “So, my friend got the lanes reserved. We just have to get registered so they can go through the standard rules and procedures. Yawn. Then, the fun begins. So…you scared yet?”

N
ed was still playing Candy Crush when he heard his name being said. Instantly looked up from his phone and found Chess, jumping quickly up from his seat. “Long time no see, Chess,” he agreed with a wide smile as he heard her voice. He laughed as she teased him about him about his height, bending his legs so that he was the same height as her. “Is that better?” he continued to laugh for a few moments before straightening his legs once more. “Well, I’ve had my hair cut last week so maybe that’s it,” he noted, running his right hand through his short brunette hair. “What about you? You look different too… have you done something with your hair? It looks really nice,” he continued, trying to remember if her hair was a different colour the last time they’d seen each other.

“I’m terrified of you,” he joked, already excited for the night ahead. He thought it was going to be a little awkward between them but so far so good. His nerves had drifted upon the sight of her and he felt a lot more relaxed than he had moments before while he was waiting for her arrival. “Where do we get registered? Is it over on the reception desk or something?” he asked, looking over her shoulder to see if anyone was waiting for them nearby.

Francesca smiled hearing him call her by one of his favorite nicknames. Only a few people ever called her anything other than Francesca or Franny because it was the first thing they thought about. She hated the nickname Franny because when she was in her early years of school there was a girl who used to call her Frizz Ball Franny because no matter what she did, her hair always seemed to look really poofy and it made her so self-conscious growing up. She was always very polite about deterring people from using that particular nickname.

Chessie shook her head at him when he kneeled down to her level. “It looks great and thank you”, she said trying not to smile like an idiot. “I actually did add a little light color to it. That and I curled it earlier. Figured since it’s not super windy today it wasn’t likely to get messed up as quickly.” That was always something she took into account when deciding to do something new with her hair. After all, she didn’t want all her hard work to essentially be blown down or rained on and ruined in a matter of minutes.

“Yup, follow me”, she said and grabbed for his arm, trying to be extra careful with her hand placement. The last thing she wanted was to accidentally grab his hand and make it awkward. She found her friend, Kimmy and gave the girl a quick hug. Once she got the directions on where to go she walked back over to Ned. “Okay, so she said we have to go pay over there, watch a five minute video and then we get as much track time as we want since they aren’t super booked…now anyway. So want to rock, paper, scissors for who pays for the admission and winner pays for the food? Or we can just do our own stuff separately…I don’t mind either way.” So much for playing it cool, she thought to herself.

"
Well, it looks really nice. I hope the helmet doesn’t flatten the curls,” he replied, not really knowing if it would. Ned couldn’t help but be relieved on times that he had short hair which didn’t need much attention. It was part of the reason why he always had it cut before it became too long. Then again, it was harder than expected to style his hair without making it look too styled but it was something he had to perfect due to him forever being on his camera. It was actually a relief that to Ned that Francesca hadn’t mentioned him vlogging go-karting. Ned had actually gone out with a few girls in the past where it was evident that they only wanted to appear online with him to get more followers. He was surprised at how many times it had happened in the past especially seeing as he isn’t as popular as some on YouTube.

“Lead the way,” he said as he grabbed his arm, letting her pull him in the direction of her friend. They didn’t have to travel far until she let go and walked over to another female, leaving him alone once more. He watched the two females talk things over before his companion traveled back over to him. He nodded as she said what her friend had told her, chuckling at her suggestion of playing rock, paper, scissors to decide who paid. He liked how she thought. “I’m up for that, how about the overall winner of go-karting can decide where we eat? Well, I’m obviously going to win so we’ll be going to the diner place not far from here. I’m in the mood for a milkshake,” his tone was playful as he joked with her.

“Are you ready to lose, Chess?” he teased as he raised his hand, his fist clenched in the shape of ‘rock’. “Rock, paper, scissors, shoot,” he said, his arm raising upwards and downs on each word before changing into a scissor shape when he said shoot.

Francesca shrugged her shoulders. “Honestly, I’m not too worried about it.” She wasn’t one that typically got all up in arms about her hair, unless it was a really special occasion, like an anniversary dinner or a wedding or something along those lines. There were some days when Franny did miss her shorter hair. It was definitely missed on those really windy days. Francesca felt herself getting more amped up as they got closer to racing time. She couldn’t help but smirk at his comment. Of course, she didn’t get too overly caught up in competition, but the occasional healthy dose never hurt anyone, or at least that’s how she rationed it.

“Your option does sound good, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to just let you win either”, she said with a smirk. It had been a while since she’d had a really good milkshake now that she thought about it though. “Yeah, yeah, yeah”, she teased back. She looked over the go-karts essentially picking one with light blue outlinings along the side of the car. She got in and familiarized herself with the controls and then directed her attention overhead to the instructional video that she was told they would have to watch.

Once everything was over with, she strapped herself in and pulled up to the starting line alongside Eddard. “May the best race win.” She watched as the light started to slowly go from red to yellow and then finally green. Once she saw the green, she put her foot on the gas and drove along the lanes.

"
You’re definitely going to let me win, Chess,” he couldn’t help but smirk towards her, knowing she was going to do no such thing. Ned followed her over to the karts, picking one that had a red background that was the colour red. Once situated in the go-kart, Ned’s attention turned to the boring but mandatory instructional video, his once smirking face turning into one of boredom. Despite finding it boring, Ned gave the video his full attention as he didn’t want to make any mistakes to embarrass himself in front of Chess.

He was relieved when the short film finally ended in which he twisted his neck back and forth so ready himself for the match ahead. “It shall be a good match,” he replied before throwing his helmet on over his head, noticing that it smelt weird as he made sure it was positioned correctly. It took every fibre of his body to not quote Lightning McQueen’s catchphrase from Cars. Looking up at the traffic lights ahead, he put his foot down as soon as the amber light turned green, grinning excitedly as he passed the start line.

Growing up, Ned was always a little worried about getting behind the wheel. He hated anything that involved an engine so go-karting, quad bikes and motorbikes were out of the questions for family days out. He thinks his reluctance stemmed from a childhood accident that he didn’t really remember but had a scar on his abdomen to prove it happened. However, he got over his fear the year as he finally learnt to drive. He finally gained the courage after one of his followers suggested it. Plus, he was tired of waiting for the bus if he had to go someone. He was so calm behind the wheel now, he was so relaxed that he was actually enjoying himself as he raced Chess, who was slightly in front of him as he travelled along the course.

Chessie did her best to try and control her speed without letting herself fall too far behind. The last thing she needed was to give reason for Ned to gloat. Chessie wasn’t really a sore loser though. She, like most people, preferred winning, but if there was a time when someone beat her out then she would hold her head high and congratulate them on a well-played strategy. Francesca smiled as she came across the line and was on her second lap. She did her best to focus on the course, making sure not to make her turns too sharp. The last thing she wanted was to crash this thing and hurt herself or Ned.

She checked her mirrors, seeing Ned alongside her. He definitely was a fierce competitor. Chessie enjoyed that among other things about him. Mainly, she liked how easy he was to talk to. Most people who she saw interact with him always acted starstruck in a sense and maybe if she didn’t have the friendship with him that she did, then things would be different. As it stood though, she did and honestly she didn’t know what she would have done without him. He could make her smile or laugh even if she didn’t want to. Sometimes it annoyed her that he had the ability to do that, but then again, she was also thankful for it because it wasn’t a good use of time being mad at the world or whoever was on the other side of that anger. As they came around the bend, it was down to the final lap. Chessie felt her heart racing as they turned each corner. Her adrenaline seemed to be in full gear.

N
ed couldn’t help but feel like a little kid again as he race the go-kart around the track. He also liked to play ‘cars’ and ‘bikes’ during his childhood which included him and his friends running around the school yard pretending to be riding a motorbike or driving a really fast car. They would all make weird car/bike noises with their mouths as they played and the noises they made were similar to the one the go-kart he was in made. He couldn’t help but repeat the noise himself as he went around for old-time sake, not realising he was doing it until his third and final lap in which it was too late for him to stop.

He occasionally checked to see where Chess was, noticing that they had been pretty neck and neck throughout the race. He was relieved almost that they had been pretty equal throughout the race seeing as it would mean that if he did eventually lose it wouldn’t be by an embarrassing amount. Ned didn’t like losing after all. Besides, he would be happy whatever the outcome just as long as Chess enjoyed herself. She had an infectious smile so he would be happy no matter if she had a smile upon her lips when she pulled her helmet off.

They were pretty neck and neck around their final lap, Ned didn’t know who actually one when they crossed the finish line. He slowed down, once he had, letting himself become slow enough so he could drift into his final destination.
