It was a warm California Saturday, with a cooler breeze. It made it the perfect day to sit outside with a cup of coffee. So, with Malcolm at the store, she decided to do just that. With a freshly brewed mug in hand, she stepped out onto the porch and sat in one of the two chairs beside the small table. Her little diamond ring sparkled in the sunlight, and for a moment she smiled, until she remembered the events of the night before. Her sunglasses did a decent job covering up the consequences, and some foundation. He was sorry, and probably off getting her something to prove just that.

Harper and Malcolm had developed a pattern - they'd drink, she'd say something she shouldn't, he'd over-react, and she'd feel the repercussions. At first, it was just with words. He'd tear her down and make her cry, and scream. But, with time, it escalated. Last night had been the fifth time he had laid a hand on her, and it had been the worst so far. They were so drunk though, she thought, defending him in her mind. She always pushed his buttons when they were drunk too. And he was sorry, he was always so incredibly sorry.

The two of them had plans to go out with a few friends tonight, so she needed to let it go. She loved him, he loved her, and she probably deserved it for being such a bitch last night. But being unemployed was weighing heavily on her. She missed having a job, and having her own money. Malcolm did his best to provide for them, and he worked his ass off, but she knew with her income they would be so much more comfortable. He refused though, insisting he had it under control.

Harper sighed, thinking up plausible scenarios to give people for when they asked how she got the shiner. She settled on tripping up the stairs drunkenly. It made sense. She was hammered the night before and stumbling all over the bar, people wouldn't question it too much. She leaned back and took a sip of her coffee, satisfied with the lie she would later tell.

Malcolm had so much to drink that he basically blacked out last night. When he woke up this morning though and saw Harper’s face, he couldn’t believe he had let himself go off the edge. He had been doing so good at channeling his rage or at least, he thought he had been. He had grabbed a few things that they needed plus a few extra surprises for Harper. He felt like crap about what he’d done and every time it happened he wished he could take it back. He knew that scared look that she got and the last thing that Malcolm ever wanted was to hurt her or for her to be scared of him. He loved her. He wanted to have a future with her. She was his light in the darkness. The one good thing in his life. He couldn’t even fathom the thought of not having her around.

He paid for the stuff and headed out of the store. He noticed a guy selling flowers and so he bought some for her. He just wanted her to be happy and he wanted her to be protected and provided for. Malcolm had dreams of giving Harper everything she wanted. He wanted to buy them a huge house. Buy her a nice car. Maybe if she wanted, have kids with her. He could tell she would make an amazing mom. She was caring, compassionate, and most of all patient. He learned that much from her dealing with him. He really didn’t ever mean to do it. He just lost control and it was hard for him to reign it in sometimes until he really saw what it did to her.

Malcolm pulled up in the driveway and parked the car, killing the engine. He grabbed the bags out of the bag and headed towards the house. He unlocked the door and brought the stuff in. “Harper? Babe?” He put the stuff on the counter before exploring to the bedroom and noticed she wasn’t there. “Harper! HAR..”, he stopped seeing her out on the porch with her sunglasses on. He bit his bottom lip, holding the flowers in hand. He knocked on the door before opening it to peek out. “Mind if I join you?” He didn’t wait for her to answer before he came out, revealing the flowers. “These are for you. The most beautiful flowers in the market for the most beautiful woman in the world.”

It didn't need stating - Harper loved Malcolm. Deeply. And he loved her just as much. He was there for her through everything, even when others had decided to run away and leave her behind. When she was shattered, Malcolm put in the time and effort to put Harper back together. Sure, Harper had her adoptive family whom she loved and was extremely close with, but they didn't understand her quite the way Malcolm had. She knew he never meant to hurt her or make her cry, because he loved her so much, he just couldn't control it when he was drunk. Especially when she was egging it on. No one knew about this though, so no one was able to tell Harper otherwise - at least not yet.

Harper remained in the chair, absorbing the warm rays while casually sipping her coffee. She had a good feeling about today and tonight, despite the events of last night. Malcolm couldn't possibly attack her two nights in a row. Last night was an isolated incident, and a completely blacked out accident. She was sure he'd keep it toned down tonight and drink less...

She didn't hear him enter the house, but jumped when she heard him scream her name. That scream - his scream - Harper had heard it many times before. She looked over at the door when it opened and gave him a small smile, hoping he couldn't tell that she had been startled by him. She didn't want him to think she feared him, even though, to a certain extent, she did. "Not at all, babe," she said but he was already out there with her. Harper's eyes fell on the flower's in his hand and her smile widened, as did her eyes behind the shades, "Aw, baby, they're lovely," she said before taking her sunglasses off and pushing them atop her head for a better look, forgetting the state her face was in.

"You're too sweet," she said, her eyes locking on his, before almost cautiously reaching out to take the flowers from him. She lifted the flowers to her face and took a deep breath, "I'll put these in a vase as soon as I get inside. I just want to finish my coffee," she assured him. Harper didn't want Malcolm to think that she wasn't grateful or that she would neglect the thoughtful gift. She placed the flowers in her lap and resumed drinking her coffee, a bit more hastily now.

Malcolm had always seemed to struggle with his temper. Whenever kids would piss him off, he would get physical before anything else. It had resulted in several trips to the principal’s office. Even some cop interaction at one point or another. Most people just labeled him as another troubled kid. Eventually, Malcolm stopped worrying about what they thought. Those people weren’t important. They weren’t clothing him or giving him money for necessary things. Malcolm was thrilled to see how Harper took to his surprise. At least she wasn’t mad at him. He couldn’t stand when they fought. He, more often times than not, went over the edge and ended up unintentionally hurting her.

“I’m glad you like them.” Malcolm took a seat next to her, looking out at the view with her. “No problem, wouldn’t want it getting cold.” Malcolm pulled out a cigarette from his pack in his pocket and pulled the lighter from his pocket. He lit the cigarette and stood up so that he could blow the smoke away without it going in Harper’s direction. He inhaled before blowing the smoke upwards. “Do you have any ideas on what you want to have for dinner?” Malcolm wasn’t really sure. Normally, he would have suggested that they go out, but he was sort of getting low on cash. They had recently transferred him to a different store which was further out so he spent more money on gas than he normally would.

Malcom took a few more puffs of the cigarette before putting it out and flicking the bud away. “I’ll meet you inside.” He kissed her gently on the forehead before sliding open the door and stepped inside, closing it behind him. He let out a sigh, the image of Harper’s face playing over again in his head. It was hard for him to believe that he had actually done that. Harper was so kind and sweet. She was the best thing in his life. He couldn’t even bear the thought of losing her. Malcolm grabbed a beer from the fridge and cracked the top off. He plopped on the couch and grabbed the remote and turned on the TV, flipping through the channels until he saw that ESPN was on with highlights from one of the games he’d missed the other night.

"I love them," she said as she took another quick sniff of the flowers. The silence between them wasn't tense, although it should have been with all things considered. She sipped her coffee, her eyes never leaving him, and he smoked his cigarette. His question pierced the silence and she gave a small shrug, "Not really. I think we have some chopped meat in the fridge, so we could make burgers?" she suggested. She didn't want to ask whether he had picked up anything from the store besides flowers, because the last thing she wanted was to sound accusatory or start a fight. Today was off to a nice start… why ruin it with silly questions.

"Okay, I'll be in in a minute," she smiled at him and watched him go inside before finishing off her cup a minute later. She brought everything inside and placed her cup in the dishwasher before setting the flowers down in order to find a vase. In one of the cabinets she found a Lenox vase her mom, well, adoptive mom, had given her when she got her place with Malcolm, a house warming gift of sorts. Harper smiled, and remembered her mother saying that a home wasn't complete without a bouquet of fresh flowers.

Harper filled the vase with cool water and carefully unwrapped the bouquet and placed it into the vase. She carried the flowers to the dining room table and set them down in the center of the tablecloth, "Perfect," she said with a smile. Harper made her way over to Malcolm and smiled when she saw him on the couch, comfortable and with a beer, "Whatcha watchin'?" she asked as she sauntered over to him and then took a seat in his lap. One glance at the tv gave it away and she let out a playful sigh, "Sports, great. Good thing there's beer," she smirked, clearly teasing him, before taking the beer from his hand and having a sip. In between the yelling, the fighting, and the crying - things were great. Malcolm and her were happy. But when it was bad, it was really bad, and it had only been getting progressively worse.

“Eh, alright. Guess it’ll be burgers”, he said as he blew the puff of smoke upward into the air. Malcolm had been trying to talk himself down though it was hard when he literally had to look at what he had done to her, which was why he drank to sort of silence the guilt, but more often times than not, he got slightly violent when he was drunk. Malcolm watched her as she walked in and put her cup in the dishwasher. He was so glad they had gotten that with the place. He would get so tired of doing dishes that eventually he would just buy paper plates and stuff, but then the garbage would pile up faster. It seemed like a no win situation.

He watched as she attentively put the flowers in the vase and then came over and sat on him. He wrapped an arm around her and held her close to him. “Yes. Sports. I missed the games last night and I just want to know if I won or not. Jerry is owing me some serious bank from what I’ve seen so far.” Malcolm watched as she took his bottle and took a sip from it. “You know the only reason you can do that is because I love you right?” Anyone else would have never been able to take his bottle and just drink from it. Harper was different. She was special. She was his lady.

Malcolm rubbed his eyes, feeling like something was caught in it and after a few moments the irritation passed. “Get me another one will you babe?” He began flipping through the stations trying to find something else to watch. “All this damn money I feed to the cable company and they can’t even give us decent choices of stuff to watch. It’s a bunch of bullshit.”

Harper worried momentarily if he didn’t want burgers, but she knew it wouldn’t make sense to buy more food while perfectly good meat sat in the fridge untouched. The flowers got her mind off the worry and things seemed to finally be normal again. As if last nights events never happened. She sat comfortably in his lap, “Well, that suddenly made this game all the more interesting.” Harper worried about Malcolm’s gambling, but it wasn’t out of hand. He never compromised their well being, and that was what mattered.

Her eyes met his and she gave him a smile as she took a second sip of his beer, “I know.” She watched him, concerned, as he rubbed his eye, “Babe, do you want me to get eye drops? Flush whatever’s in there out?” Her hand gently ran through his hair and rested on the back of his head, then nodded, “Sure thing.” She slid off his lap and headed to the kitchen, finishing off his beer on the way. She spoke from the kitchen as she grabbed two cold beers from the fridge, “The cable companies are a total rip off. That’s why so many people just use Hulu and Netflix and ditch cable all together.

She removed the caps and tossed them into the trash, then sauntered back over with both beers in hand. Harper took a seat beside him on the couch and held one of the beers out to him, “For you, my love.” A smile was on her face and she clinked the neck of her bottle against his lightly, “Here’s to hoping you win some cash after this game.” She leaned over and gave him a small, gentle kiss to the lips before taking a swig from her beer.

“Damn straight. I’m about to be $600 dollars richer”, he said with a smirk. He’d have to call Jerry later about making the payment arrangements. He hoped he wouldn’t try giving him the run around like Tom had. “No. It’s fine now”, he replied as he blinked, allowing his eyes to re-adjust to his surroundings and just in time too. “Maybe I’ll have to call and complain to a manager or something. See if they give me another free subscription to a channel like they did when they claimed I hadn’t paid the bill and then double charged me. Like no, I don’t know who they thought they were dealing with but I pay attention to that shit.”

It had infuriated Malcolm that they had really tried to put one over on him, but as usual he was one step ahead. “Yeah, but now they’re talking about making it a crime or something to share passwords. Like what kind of bullshit is that? Prisons aren’t filled up enough now we have to worry about people going to jail over stupid shit like Netflix?” Malcolm shook his head before the angle of her going into the fridge caught his attention. She had no idea how fucking hot she was. It drove Malcolm crazy though when they were out and other guys stared at her, which is why he had “suggested” she not wear any ass hugging shorts unless she was doing it at home for him.

“Here. Here”, he said clinking the bottle with hers and then took a sip from it. Time passed on. Malcolm had probably gone through three beers so far so he was starting to feel them a little bit. His hand creeped over to Harper’s leg, rubbing it up and down as he leaned over and started to gently kiss her neck.

That money would be really nice to have around the house, and she hoped he would win. Plus, she didn't want to see him angry about the loss. Harper watched as he blinked, trying to get whatever was irritating his eye out of there, then smiled when he said it was fine, "Good." Harper remembered that time, and it was a time when Malcolm's temper had paid off for them. They were both meticulous about paying their bills, and never missed a payment, so it was really surprising and irritating when they had been double charged that way.

"That would be nice, see if they'll give us HBO," she chuckled, "I hear Game of Thrones is supposed to be pretty good." Harper had heard about that and rolled her eyes, "What a fucking joke, as if prisons aren't already over-crowded? We don't need to fill our prisons with any more non-violent criminals than we already have in there. It's such a waste of tax-payer money." The topic infuriated Harper, so she normally stayed away from it entirely except with Malcolm. She talked to him about practically everything.

She walked back over with the beers, and felt her eyes on him. The way he had been looking at her made her blush. Malcolm always made her feel as though there were no other women in the room besides her, as though she was the most beautiful woman in the entire world - it was a blessing and a curse. It also made him insanely jealous and unreasonable at times.

The thoughts of his jealousy and the pain in her face, it all passed with each beer she brought out from the fridge for the two of them. Before she knew it, she had a pretty good buzz going. His hand felt cool on her warm skin as she sat close beside him on the couch. When his lips met her neck she let out a soft sigh and tilted her head to the side, exposing more flesh for the taking. Her own hand traveled to his lap, resting dangerously close to the crease of his upper thigh and groin.

Malcolm, on average, had two speeds. Moderately content and chill or super angsty and irritable. It was rare that there was anything in-between or even better, but there were those rare moments. Unfortunately, the irritable side seemed to come out more often than anything else. There were often always these little things that build up throughout the day. A machine broke down at work. One of his co-workers who had only been there for a short time had gotten promoted over him. Someone cut him off on the way home from work. The ATM at the bank was down. Dinner wasn’t ready when he came home starving.

There were a number of things and sometimes it just got to him so he drank and when that happened, it normally got worse before it got better. “Yeah that’s what a buddy of mine said. He also said it makes up for him not playing for Cinemax with all the nudity.” Dale wasn’t necessarily wired right, but no one was perfect. Malcolm agreed with Harper. There was a lot of shit that people in government tried to do that seemed to take away from the serious issues that kept getting bigger and bigger. He couldn’t for the life of him figure out though if people didn’t like things so much, why some refused to vote in elections.

It always sounded stupid to him when people gave the reason of their vote not making a difference. If 1,000 people all have that same excuse, that’s 1,000 votes that a good candidate who may have lost could have won with those. Malcolm’s thoughts focused elsewhere when he saw her expose more of her neck to him. He smirked, pushing her hair back, before sinking into her further. He could feel himself rising under her hand. Malcolm cupped her face, careful to avoid the bruised areas of it before leaning in to give her a kiss. His lips hungrily searched for hers, wanting as much of her as he could have in that moment.
