When Harper first told Malcolm she was pregnant, the news did not go over very well at all. In fact, Malcolm's reaction had worried Harper, even frightened her. She wondered whether she should even keep the child. Everything in her brain screamed not to, and that they were making a giant mistake. Neither of them were ready for parenthood, that was pretty evident. But eventually, Malcolm mellowed, and seemed much more keen on the idea of being a father and starting a family.

Harper was so relieved when Malcolm had changed his tune, and soon he was spending more and more time at her place than his own. Living separate lives felt like a distant memory, and Harper began to truly believe the two were becoming a family. Harper even convinced them to take a vacation, to relax together before the baby came. Somewhere beautiful and warm, but also within their budget. Where? Bermuda!

The sun felt so soothing on her protruding baby bump, and she ran her hands over it as the two laid on sunbeds on the beach. Everything had finally fallen into place for Harper. She was finally genuinely, and completely, happy. Her head turned and she smiled to herself, eyes focusing on him, "I love you." It rolled off the tongue so nicely. Everything about the moment felt right. Nothing could taint this feeling for her.

It was a warm California Saturday, with a cooler breeze. It made it the perfect day to sit outside with a cup of coffee. So, with Malcolm at the store, she decided to do just that. With a freshly brewed mug in hand, she stepped out onto the porch and sat in one of the two chairs beside the small table. Her little diamond ring sparkled in the sunlight, and for a moment she smiled, until she remembered the events of the night before. Her sunglasses did a decent job covering up the consequences, and some foundation. He was sorry, and probably off getting her something to prove just that.

Harper and Malcolm had developed a pattern - they'd drink, she'd say something she shouldn't, he'd over-react, and she'd feel the repercussions. At first, it was just with words. He'd tear her down and make her cry, and scream. But, with time, it escalated. Last night had been the fifth time he had laid a hand on her, and it had been the worst so far. They were so drunk though, she thought, defending him in her mind. She always pushed his buttons when they were drunk too. And he was sorry, he was always so incredibly sorry.

The two of them had plans to go out with a few friends tonight, so she needed to let it go. She loved him, he loved her, and she probably deserved it for being such a bitch last night. But being unemployed was weighing heavily on her. She missed having a job, and having her own money. Malcolm did his best to provide for them, and he worked his ass off, but she knew with her income they would be so much more comfortable. He refused though, insisting he had it under control.

Harper sighed, thinking up plausible scenarios to give people for when they asked how she got the shiner. She settled on tripping up the stairs drunkenly. It made sense. She was hammered the night before and stumbling all over the bar, people wouldn't question it too much. She leaned back and took a sip of her coffee, satisfied with the lie she would later tell.

Harper had been feeling incredibly guilty lately for keeping secrets from Jase. It had been a little while since Malcolm showed up at her job, something she should have told Jase about immediately, yet it still felt like yesterday. The whole night made her stomach twist. She hated keeping that from Jase, but thought it would be for the best. She knew he would do something extreme, and he had a career to consider. The last thing she wanted was his emotions for her costing him his job. Malcolm wasn't worth it. On days Harper received a texts from Malcolm, which she ignored, her guilt was the worst.

She absentmindedly stirred the pasta and it boiled and cooked, feeling a lump form in her throat. He phone buzzed for a third time and it broke her trance. Malcolm again, confessing his undying love for her once more. She didn't respond and set her phone back down, and continued making dinner for her and Jase.

Harper had just met with her last patient. She was so thankful for the opportunity to work again, and be able to help others overcome some of the same issues she once had. It wasn’t planned, but she decided to stay late, even after Laura had already decided to call it a night. This wasn’t her first time staying after hours to try and come up with ways to help her patients. She had done it quite often when she was back home, partly to be away from her fiancée but mostly for the well being of her patients. Speaking of which, he had been on her mind quite a bit lately... he was in town. Somewhere. It terrified her. She thought she was finally free, then bam, he's here.

Now wasn't the time to think about it though. She had her patients to focus on. And Jase... who still didn't know that Malcolm had contacted her. She swore she would tell Jase if he ever did, but she didn't want to worry him. Especially if Malcolm was in town for work. There was nothing either of them could do to rid themselves of him. So, naturally, Harper took the time to immerse herself in her work and not think about it. She tucked one leg up to her chest, her foot on her chair, and brought herself closer to her desk as she flipped through a patient file. Her cheek rested against her knee and she sighed a bit, knowing the current methods she was using weren’t effective and she would probably need to refer them to Laura for further treatment, and some meds. She wasn’t an advocate for prescription drugs solving mental issues; they weren’t always the best answer. But, in this case, they may have been. So, she closed the file and started a “refer to Laura” pile.

After an hour of trying to assess one of her newest patients, her stomach growled. Around this time she would already be having dinner. She checked the time and knew on Fridays Jase worked late, so she would have been having dinner alone either way. The Chinese carry-out across the street was pretty good… maybe she would pop in there, she thought. It would provide her with a well deserved break.

Face claim: Megan Fox
Name: Harper Casterly
Age: 28
Born: California
Relationship status: Taken; Jase Vegas
Occupation: Therapist

Past:
Harper grew up in California, in foster care, and all she knew about her parents was that they were too young and too rich to raise a kid. She figured it was too much scandal for them and resents them, blaming them for her rough upbringing. Although Harper eventually landed in a foster home with an amazing family, who actually took in other older foster children, she will never forget how hard it was being passed from family to family as a child. However, that same rough childhood led her to the career she found fulfillment and joy in, helping others work through hard times and struggles. Harper had a few close friends growing up, two of them being Jase and Malcolm. Jase, the man she secretly loved, disappeared a long time ago never to be heard of again. Malcolm eventually stole her heart, and for a long time things were great. Malcolm even proposed, and Harper eagerly said yes. But then Harper starting to bring more money into the household than him, and things began to slowly take a turn for the worse. Malcolm became physically and emotionally abusive. She was forced to quit her job that she loved, so that Malcolm could control every aspect of her life. She eventually broke off the engagement and moved in with her foster sister. Even though they were not together, Malcolm managed to make living in town and trying to find a new job a nightmare. He continued to stalk her and emotionally torment her for months. One day Harper saw Jase’s photo in the paper and then did some Googling. She found out where he lived and with the help of a few close friends and her last foster family, she cleared out her bank account and left California on a whim and with the hope that Jase would be the one to save her and put her back together again. She did her best to keep her destination a secret so that Malcolm would not be able to find her.

Present:
She currently lives with Jase, who knows about the violence she had to go through at the hands of his old friend. At the moment, she is working as a therapist for Laura and trying to build a new life for herself. Recently, Malcolm found Harper and moved to town for work. He contacted Harper, and ambushed her at work after hours – none of which she immediately told Jase about. He hopes to win Harper back, but it is highly unlikely considering she is happy with Jase.

Future:
Even though she is currently head over heels in love with Jase, nothing has been planned for a final. I would like for her to settle down with someone, whether it be Jase or someone else. Malcolm would eventually disappear from her life as well (court order, death, jail, losing interest, etc.)
