Allie couldn’t even remember what number glass she was on, but she was pretty sure she hadn’t gone over five yet. She had been contemplating a lot. After talking with her friend Derek, she realized that she needed to get off her ass and try and fix things with Dean. If for nothing else, for the sake that she was sick of torturing herself with the ideas of what if or the wondering at night about what he was doing? What he was thinking about? If he had someone else to satisfy his needs and desires? Did he think about Allie in that way still? It was a series of neverending questions that she just felt like if she didn’t get answered she was going to go crazy.

She had contemplated just calling him instead of potentially making a fool out of herself. While she wasn’t super drunk or anything, she did have a buzz going which was enough to get her off her ass and calling one of her friends to come and get her because she didn’t have cash on her and she wasn’t about to take an uber after the news story she’d heard this afternoon. Once her friend texted that she was downstairs, Allie sighed and put on her jacket and headed downstairs. She hadn’t even noticed that there were light sounds of thunder and that it was starting to rain. It was light…up until they were like five mins from Dean’s house.

“Perfect…”, she muttered as she grabbed the ponytail holder that her friend had sitting on top of her change and put her hair up. Once they got there, she thanked her and ran out of the car and towards the door. She knocked on the door and waited for an answer. She just hoped that he was here.

The last thing Dean expected was for Allison to ever want to see him again. His overly dramatic and drunken bitchfest was sure to have deterred her. But, apparently that wasn't the case. While he had reverted back to ignoring the constantly nagging question of "what if?" in his mind, Allie had been wondering that exact same thing. The way he ignored it was with Nellie, the one woman he had any sort of steady 'relationship' with after Allie. Things with Nellie were nice and casual, and a part of his could see things eventually becoming more, when he could finally let Allie go. But that time was even further away now that the feelings her had for her were stirred awake once more. His mind and heart had taken a massive step backwards, and he was clawing his way back to where he had been, one date at a time with Nellie.

On a rainy evening such as this one he found himself curled up on his couch beside Nellie, arm around her shoulders, seemingly relaxed and content although his mind was running in circles. One of the Harry Potter films was playing on tv so they decided to watch, getting into the Halloween spirit with some seasonal drinks as well - a potent pumpkin ale for himself and a hard apple cider for Nellie.

When Dean first heard sounds coming from outside he thought it was the neighbors. No one would be at his place… but his eyes couldn't help but glance at the door. Then he heard it - a knock at the door. What the hell? Maybe it was a delivery… He slipped out from beside her and set his beer down on the coffee table before excusing himself to grab the door. What was revealed when he unlocked it was the last sight he ever expected to see - Allie standing in the rain. She looked oddly serene and beautiful, but that shouldn't have been much of a surprise.

He cleared his throat and kept the door closed, not wanting either female to catch sight of the other. His voice was nearly a whisper, "Allie? What are you doing all the way over here?" Dean didn't sound rude or upset, just genuinely surprised. His eyes glanced around and saw no sign of her car or a ride. Not only was she at his door, but she obviously had no way to leave. Well, shit… Did he invite her in? Did he offer to call her a cab? What was the proper protocol in this situation? He had no fucking clue. So, instead, he stood at the doorway, totally dumbfounded.

Snuggled up on Dean’s couch, Harry Potter on the television, with both of their dogs laying on the floor was Nellie’s idea of great night. She was dressed in one of Dean’s over-sized t-shirts with her bottle of hard cider in her hand. Whenever Nellie stayed over at his place-- her German Shepherd Pitbull mix, Murph, also stayed. Nellie had adopted Murph a few years back and ever since-- they’d been almost inseparable. Luckily, Dean was fine with the doggo accompanying his owner when she slept over. Murph always stayed close to his mom, watching and making sure she was safe.

Harry Potter had just been announced as a participant in the tri-wizard tournament when Dean got up from the couch. Nellie grabbed the blanket that had been covering both of them and held in place so it wouldn’t fall. She stayed bundled up in the blanket, paying attention to the movie when both dogs started to perk up. Murph’s ears were standing straight up, catching Nellie’s attention. She leaned over as he stood up, tail wagging. ”Murph? Whatsa matter?” She asked, straightening up, reaching out to scratch the dog behind his ears. Turning her head, she saw Dean standing at the front door. He was talking to someone but in a very quiet voice. Any interest she’d had in the movie was gone as she continued to watch Dean.

Sitting there for a few moments, Nellie struggled with what she should do. There was a sinking feeling in the pit of her as she got to her feet. Murph’s eyes followed her intently as she grabbed the blanket and wrapped it around her body. She didn’t move right away, instead she tried to see who was on the other side of the door. When she couldn’t get a clear view, Nellie slowly walked towards the door, finally seeing who had paid them a visit.

Seeing that it was Allison did not surprise Nellie in the least but it did help contribute the knot that had formed in her stomach. Quietly, she let out an exhale as she kept the blanket pulled tightly around her. Biting down on her lower lip, she tried to figure out what to do next. Murph was right at her feet, standing next to her. She brought a hand down and scratched his head. Done with being awkward, Nellie finally took a step next to Dean and held up a hand in a wave. ”Hey, Allison.” As uncomfortable as the situation was, ignoring it would have made it even worse. The best thing she could do was remain calm and be polite.

Allie knew there was a chance this wouldn’t work. A chance that he’d just had enough and just wanted to move on with his life. She couldn’t blame him for that at all though it was one of those things that would hurt regardless. Yet, here she stood, in the rain, vulnerable and hopeful that maybe they could salvage be things. She knew it probably wouldn’t be as cookie cutter as she would have hoped, but she figured it could have been worse. Allie was just about to see if her friend hadn’t gotten too far away when she heard the door open and saw him standing before her. Every time she saw him, it was like she got weak knees or something. Her heart seemed to pound and her stomach felt as though it was fluttering like a butterfly.

“Hi, I’m sorry to just…um drop by on you like this. I was just…um thinking…I was thinking about you and I figured maybe I would see if you were at home and if you wanted to hang out and talk.” Allie was completely caught off guard hearing an unfamiliar bark and then seeing someone who she didn’t expect. “Hi…”, she said suddenly feeling very awkward about being there, especially seeing the way that she was dressed. She was in comfortable clothes which meant she had probably been here for a while. “Um, well, I guess this is probably why I should have called first”, she said with a nervous laugh trying to hold herself together.

“I think I’m just going to go now.” She turned on her heel and started walking back down the street. She wasn’t sure how she was going to get back at this point, but she just needed to get out of here. The last thing she wanted was to break down in front of him and his company. Thankfully, the rain would sort of shield her tears or make it less apparent that she was crying. She did her best to shield her phone and try and pull up her uber app to see if she could get a car to come get her and take her home.

Though things were casual in Dean's mind, he knew that it wasn't as casual as he thought. Nellie spent the nights, and she brought her dog to play with his Alaskan Malamute, Rook… Not quite as casual as he let on. Which was what made the situation he found himself in even harder. Two women pulling at his heart strings; two incredible women. Some men would think it was heavenly, what a treat to have these women wanting a piece of him, but all it did was give him chest pains. He didn't want to hurt anyone, he cared about both of them. Up until that moment he had done a decent job of keeping the two separate, mostly because Allison hadn't been in the picture until not too long ago. Out of sight, out of mind - but not anymore.

She had been thinking about him? God, this was literally the moment he had dreamt about for years, and now that it was here he was regretting all those wishes he had made in the past. This wasn't how it was supposed to go. It wasn't supposed to be this complicated. "Um, well-" he started speaking but was cut off by Nellie's voice. He didn't realize Nellie had walked over until he heard her, causing him to jump slightly. Well, shit, so much for hiding it. There was no sense in keeping the door nearly shut so he let it swing open slightly, revealing Nellie more clearly, as well as their dogs. To anyone looking in, this didn't look promising for Allison…

Being as awkward as ever, he also chuckled, then cleared his throat and rubbed the back of his neck with his hand. Hearing her say she was leaving sent him into a bit of a panic. Go where? How? The weather was terrible and it was only going to get worse. It probably wasn't the best decision, but he rushed out after her and grabbed her arm gently, "You don't have to go, come inside. It's pouring, and cold." The rain beat down on him and he glanced back at Nellie, poor Nellie… His face conveyed how sorry he was, but his heart and his conscience couldn't let Allison leave in this condition. "I'll give you some dry clothes, and I'm sure Rook would be happy to see you," he added with a hopeful, but small smile.

Penelope tried like hell to keep a neutral expression on her face. She was one of those people that even if she was beyond upset, she could still put a smile on her face and fake it. It had been a skill she’d picked up very early on. At this time, she had trouble faking a smile. She’d been staring at Allie but then managed to shift her focus to Dean. She knew he hadn’t planned for anything as awkward as this to happen. A huge part of her was ready to pounce and let her jealousy pour in. However, the mature part of her wouldn’t let it happen. They weren’t in high school and Dean wasn’t some possession they could fight over. He was a man; a man who had been very much in love with the woman that stood before them. Nellie never would have asked him about it, but her gut told her that he still was.

The poise she had was about to crumble before Dean and Allison if she didn’t get out of sight soon. Exhaling softly, she finally forced that smile on her face as she glanced at Dean. The words were stuck in her throat, but she managed to get them out. ”Allison, you absolutely shouldn’t be out in this weather.” Swallowing hard, she turned her attention back to Dean. ”I will go grab her some towels and dry clothes.” She threw a smile back their way as she turned and went towards the bedroom and bathroom.

The moment she was out of their sight, that hateful sting of tears came to her eyes. Nellie tried blinking them away, but those damn tears managed to slide down her cheeks. She went into the bathroom first and grabbed a couple of bath towels. Next, she went into the bedroom to get Allison a pair of sweats and shirt that belonged to Dean. The tears kept coming as she grabbed the clothes. Instead of walking out of the bedroom, she sat down on the bed and held the clothes to her chest. Murph had followed her into the bedroom and sat down next to his owner. He always sensed when she was feeling down and this time was no exception.Tears continued to fall as Murph rested his head on her lap. A hand came down and she scratched behind his ears.

”Mama will be okay, Bubbers.” She used the side of her arm to wipe away at her tears. There was also the familiar throb of a migraine starting to take shape. Blinking her eyes repeatedly, Nellie willed it to not get worse. If it became bad, she’d just go home. Swallowing hard, she stood up and gently smiled down at her dog. ”C’mon sweet boy.” She gave her dog one final scratch behind his ears, they both went back out to the front.

Approaching both people, Nellie focused her attention on Allison and held out the towels and clothes. ”I hope these are okay.” She continued to force a smile and just hoped that neither one could tell that she had a bit of a break down. It was difficult to keep from continuing to cry, but she held strong. For all she knew, this might have been the last time she and Dean enjoyed a movie, snuggled up on a rainy night. If that was the case, Penelope would forever hate rainy nights.

Allie nearly dropped her phone when she felt her arm being grabbed. She turned to see Dean holding onto her, urging her to come inside. That was the last thing that she wanted to do. She knew better though. For one, it wasn’t fair to keep him out here. She couldn’t think of an excuse quick enough where he might have let her go. Unfortunately, she didn’t even having reception at the moment. Lovely, she thought to herself. Once she heard the thunder crackle, she figured he was right. She turned and sighed. “Okay, but just long enough for me to call a taxi.” The last thing she wanted was to be third wheeling to whatever had been going on before she got here.

She came inside and took her jacket off and hung it on the coat rack. She slipped out of her socks and shoes that were now soaked. Before she knew it, Penelope was approaching her with stuff. “Um, thanks”, she said trying to force a smile which might have looked like more of a wince, but she couldn’t really tell. She excused herself to the bathroom and closed the door, sighing as she looked up in the mirror. This was the stupidest thing she had ever done. Why couldn’t she have just stayed at home with her bottle of wine. She could have finished it off and passed out in her bed, forgetting about the entire night.

Allie got out of her clothes and changed into the clothes she had brought her that belonged to Dean. “Pull yourself together”, she said as she looked at herself in the mirror. She was not going to cry again. She splashed some water on her face and dried it with a towel. She was going to do her best to get out of here and then she’d go home and drink it all away. She watched the lights flicker a little and rolled her eyes. Dammit if she'd be stuck here with no reception and no power. Thankfully it just appeared to be that but she prayed it didn't completely go out. She came out of the bathroom and back to where Dean and Penelope were. She placed a hand on Rook’s head, petting him. “Do you mind if I grab a glass of water?” Everything in her wanted to ask for something stronger, but she knew that probably wasn’t the best of ideas. She couldn’t believe how nice this girl had been though. If it was Allie, she probably would have been more territorial but that was just her.

Dean didn't understand what he could have possibly done for this to happen to him - to them. It was some sort of cruel and unusual punishment. Was he evil in a past life? None of it made sense. Honestly, he didn't care if his heart broke but seeing Allison and Penelope this way was difficult to bare. Though, he had to say he was impressed with Nellie's composure because he was a mess, inside and out.

Unfortunately, Nellie's gut was right - he did still love Allie, and he figured he always would. Hence why he too was out in the rain making sure she didn't get caught in it. Everyone had to have the one who got away, right? Wasn't that a part of life and growing up? He liked to think he wasn't alone in feeling this way so he forced himself to believe that.

"You can stay as long as you need to, Allie, you know that," he said, eyes lingering on her a little longer than they should have. To his relief she agreed to come inside, and he gave her a small smile before leading her back in through the front door of the house. And there was Nellie, with clothes as she promised. God, she was too good, too generous, too forgiving perhaps. Then he noticed her eyes, they were red and glassy, a tell-tale sign that she wasn't as okay as she let on. Instantly, Dean felt terrible and his stomach did a flip. He didn't want to hurt anyone, and there he was, doing just that.

He mustered up a smile for Nellie though, forcing his own self pity down for the time being. Their exchange looked pained but the two were trying. He watched as Allie walked away and then his eyes landed back on Nellie. He stepped closer to her and reached a cold, wet hand up to her cheek, "Thank you," he said, his words having deeper meaning that she hoped she understood. Dean bent his head down and pressed a gentle kiss to her lips before closing the door and scooping up Allie's wet clothes to bring to the laundry room and toss into the dryer.

He sat back on the couch with Nellie and then saw the lights flicker. His eyes glanced worriedly at Nellie. If they lost power it was unlikely that Allie would be able to get home, making the awkward encounter last well into the night. When Allie came out wearing his clothes he felt as though he had been transported years back. He forced himself to look away at the television and nodded, "Help yourself to whatever is in the fridge, Als. I tossed some of your stuff in the dryer, feel free to add in the rest."
